Shorebird ID Made Easier

American Avocet by Michele Louden

Shorebird identification can be challenging for birders of all experience levels. In South Florida shorebirds are always in their winter plumage — drab brown and gray. Phoebes Field Trip Leader Paddy Cunningham says they can seem like “moving rocks,” and using only field marks to identify them can “drive you crazy.”

Join Paddy for a virtual presentation designed to help you learn the important differences distinguishing shorebird species. You will gain knowledge on how different feeding behaviors can help distinguish species that look alike. Learn how to focus on shorebird silhouettes and feeding behaviors to improve identification skills. Discover how habitat can also play a role in knowing where certain species of shorebirds are likely to be found. According to Paddy, shorebird identification isn't always easy but the knowledge she'll share should make it easier.
